Gulangyu Palace Museum celebrated its renaming and the launch of a new exhibition on Dec 6 in Xiamen. Previously known as the "Kulangsu Gallery of Foreign Artefacts From the Palace Museum Collection", it is now officially named the "Gulangyu Gallery of Artefacts From the Palace Museum Collection".
As the only themed branch of the Palace Museum outside Beijing, this collaboration between the Xiamen Municipal People's Government and the Palace Museum showcases a rich collection of ancient Chinese art and foreign artifacts. It serves as a vital platform for displaying China's traditional culture and the exchange between Chinese and foreign civilizations.
The renaming and new exhibition not only enrich the variety of exhibits and enhance the cultural influence of the "Palace Museum Culture + Gulangyu World Heritage", but also boost Gulangyu's cultural impact while promoting and developing China's outstanding traditional culture.
The newly revamped exhibition is the most comprehensive since the museum's opening eight years ago. It features over 200 artifacts, including 128 new pieces. The collection spans from the Shang (c. 16th century-11th century BC) and Zhou (c. 11th century-256 BC) dynasties to modern times, encompassing Chinese masterpieces and global treasures. Notably, eight cultural relics are on display outside the Palace Museum for the first time, offering high academic and artistic value.
The exhibition is complemented by a roundtable dialogue on "World Cultural Heritage Sites Protection and Dynamic Cultural Inheritance". This event aims to foster academic exchange, deepen cooperation between Gulangyu Island and world heritage sites globally, and promote the internationalization of Chinese culture.
