On Aug 28, over 100 participants of the 23rd "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students embarked on a cultural exploration of Sanfangqixiang (Three Lanes and Seven Alleys), a historic neighborhood in Chinese heritage.
They explored landmarks such as the former residences of Lin Juemin and Yan Fu, enjoyed Min Opera performances, and savored jasmine tea, immersing themselves in authentic Chinese living.
At Yan Fu's former residence, the participants were captivated by the fusion of Chinese and Western architectural aesthetics. Through guided tours and exhibitions, they gained insight into Yan Fu's life and legacy as a remarkable translator and thinker.
"Yan Fu not only left a mark in history with his outstanding translations but also led China's enlightenment and reform with his progressive ideas," remarked a student from Estonia. To him, Yan's former residence serves as more than just a historical site but also as a bridge connecting past and present, fostering international cultural exchange and understanding.
Subsequently, at the waterside pavilion stage in Sanfangqixiang, they relished a vibrant Min Opera performance, sipped Fuzhou jasmine tea, and immersed themselves in the rich charm of Chinese culture.
During the visit, the array of cultural and creative products in Sanfangqixiang caught their attention. From "Fu Culture" stickers to fragrant jasmine flower sachets, the participants eagerly made purchases via Alipay.
"In China, everything can be easily managed with just a smartphone. This convenient lifestyle is truly amazing!" exclaimed Lorena from Chile.
Capturing a group photo under the heart-shaped banyan tree in Sanfangqixiang, the participants immortalized their unforgettable journey. A student from Burundi acknowledged the vastness of Chinese culture and expressed a desire to deepen their understanding during their studies at Bohai University, with hopes of working in this land of opportunities after graduation.
