Fujian expressways pave a new path to sustainability

In recent years, Fujian Expressway Co Ltd has identified the new energy industry as a key driver of the province's transition to a greener economy. By leveraging resources such as toll stations and expressway service area roofs, Fujian is actively promoting the development of photovoltaic power generation to reshape its energy landscape. This initiative aims to enhance the integration of renewable energy sources and foster a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

Fujian has successfully built 62 distributed photovoltaic power stations capable of generating nearly 16 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually. This substantial output is equivalent to replacing over 6,000 metric tons of standard coal and reducing emissions of harmful gases by about 20,000 tons, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter.

The Qingyunshan Service Area hosts the Fujian Expressway's pioneering distributed photovoltaic power station, boasting an installed capacity exceeding 800 kilowatts and an average annual generation of over 800,000 kilowatt-hours.

The utilization of expressway service area roofs for photovoltaic power stations optimizes land use and revitalizes existing resources. By adopting a "self-use with surplus electricity fed into the grid" approach, these power stations not only reduce peak electricity demand during peak hours but also cater to daytime operational needs. The integration of excess electricity into the grid allows for profit generation and maximizes energy utilization.

This year, Fujian Expressway has intensified its "photovoltaic + expressway" development model, with eight operational distributed photovoltaic power stations already in place.

To date, 14 photovoltaic power stations along Fujian's expressways have been connected to the grid, collectively expected to produce 4.11 million kilowatt-hours of green energy and reduce carbon emissions by 3,357.23 tons annually.
