It's a good time for choosing goldfish for Huang Zhen, an expert on breeding new varieties, who recently visited a fish farm in a village of Fuzhou, Fujian province.

Huang, 36, has been guiding local goldfish farmers since 2018, when a group of experts — dispatched by the Fujian Department of Science and Technology and the Fuzhou municipal science and technology bureau — to support more than 10 goldfish farms in the Shiba Chongxi area of Nantong town, Minhou county.

"The new goldfish varieties we breed here have won prizes in national and world competitions several times," Huang said at the Chunyuanli ecological aquaculture farm in Gucheng village.

The new goldfish varieties bred at the farm have been exported to many countries and regions, including Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States.

Huang and his team not only succeeded in breeding new varieties that are popular in the market, but also increased the survival rate of goldfish seedlings from about 70 percent to more than 90 percent, which significantly increased the yield.

The technologies in which he participated have been applied at the farm, bringing a new output value of more than 30 million yuan ($4.27 million).
