Xiamen, a coastal city in East China's Fujian province, ranked among the top 100 in the Global Innovation Index (GII), which was released by the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2022.

The city's GII ranking of "Science and Technology Clusters" jumped 12 places from the previous year to 91st, year-on-year, making it one of the fastest-growing Chinese cities on the list. Its "Science and Technology Intensity" index ranked 93rd.

Xiamen has seen robust growth in its internationalization of technological innovation and comprehensive competitiveness. According to the latest GII, Xiamen was shortlisted as one of the top 100 global science and technology clusters, ranked eighth among the demonstration cities for entrepreneurship and innovation among China's micro and small-sized companies, and the Xiamen Torch Development Zone for High Technology Industries ranked 14th among all national high-tech zones.

The city has made great efforts to develop strategic emerging industries and promote industrial transformation and upgrading.

Xiamen Science City, a landmark project, has started construction to boost the high-quality development of the region after completion. The project has introduced a batch of academicians-led research institutes including the Xiamen Biomedical Innovation Research Institute and constructed an incubator, a transformation center for scientific and technological achievements and a park for advanced manufacturing. The project has formed an industrial system of "research and development (R&D) institutions, incubators, innovation bases and professional parks".

The new energy industry in Xiamen is also growing rapidly and became a strong driving force for the city's industrial growth last year. Data shows that the growth rate of output value of Xiamen's new energy industry surpassed 40 percent in 2022.
