Fujian exploring new paths for cross-Straits development
Fujian, the closest mainland province to Taiwan, has conducted closer and deeper exchanges and cooperation in various fields with the island in recent years.
To promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations and the reunification of the motherland, Fujian has been exploring new paths for cross-Straits integrated development.
A slew of specific measures has been rolled out to speed up the building of the province into the "first home" for Taiwan residents who come to the mainland.
Over the past five years, Fujian has introduced more than 6,300 Taiwan-funded projects, with the actual utilization of Taiwan investment exceeding 6 billion dollars. The trade volume between Fujian and Taiwan has increased from more than 890 billion yuan ($139.46 billion) at the beginning of 2017 to more than 1.2 trillion yuan by the end of 2020.
Fujian has taken the lead in improving ties by approving 52 Taiwan vocational qualifications as well as adopting 20 Taiwan vocational skill qualifications and 10 professional and technical vocational qualification certificates. These moves have benefited over 5,600 Taiwan compatriots.
The province has also stepped up infrastructure construction to facilitate transportation between Fujian and Taiwan. Fujian has since Aug 2018 been supplying water to Jinmen in Taiwan to alleviate the area's water shortage.
A number of cross-Straits cultural events, such as the cross-Straits youth festival and youth forum, have also been held to bolster cultural exchanges between people from both sides of the Straits.
Fujian has worked to ensure equal treatment for Taiwan compatriots and local residents by issuing preferential policies and constantly improving service systems, so that Taiwan compatriots can feel the "warmth of home" while living in the province.
