"Fishballs are more than a seasoning or side dish," she said. "They can be made into different shapes. We want to make fishballs delicious, fun and sophisticated."

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Wu saw an opportunity to expand her customer base.

"The young generation seldom cooks," she said. "We found the trend and began working on new products."

One of those products is instant fishballs, which the company developed last year. Instead of cooking frozen fishballs in boiling water, the new product can be eaten directly.

Wu also approached specialists in creative products to make the instant fishballs more appealing. "We also made efforts in coaching customers how to make dishes using our fishballs through livestreaming."

Under Wu's leadership, sales volume climbed by 34.2 percent in 2020 from the year before.

Born in Taiwan, Wu has been living in Quanzhou for more than 20 years. It has became her hometown.

"My husband comes from Quanzhou, my parents live here with us and my two children were born and raised here. For me, the hometown is the place where my family is," shesaid.

"In the future, we want to build a food industrial park to attract more businesses and entrepreneurs from Taiwan, and bring more delicious foods and products to the mainland market."
