East China's Fujian province sent 135 medical workers to Wuhan to join in the battle against the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) on Jan 27. Among them was a man named Chen Wei.

Chen recently received a subsidy of 2,000 yuan ($286) from the Fuzhou Labor Union, which he decided to donate to the China Primary Health Care Foundation. He said that the money should be given to grassroots organizations and people living in rural areas.

Chen, along with a number of other Fujian medical staff, is now working at the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, which has been reserved for patients infected with the NCP.

Faced with a severe situation and heavy workloads, Chen has been forced to adjust his mindset. He is now serving as a psychologist and providing counseling services for patients.

"To be a good clinician, I need to focus on both the physical and mental health of my patients and pay more attention to their psychological condition. I usually spend two hours a day chatting with my patients to better understand their inner thoughts in hopes that they can develop the proper mental state for battling the virus," said Chen.

"We can isolate viruses and patients, but we can't isolate love and hope," Chen added. "The trust and gratitude of my patients has made me realize the importance of coming to Wuhan, and I firmly believe that the epidemic can be controlled and prevented with the strong support of our country and our people."
