Fuzhou, capital of East China's Fujian province has been selected as the main venue in China to celebrate 2020 World City Day on June 26.

The United Nations General Assembly has designated the Oct 31st annually as World Cities Day.

The day aims to promote the international community's interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

It is the first international day promoted by the Chinese government at the United Nations. In 2010, China proposed to designate the closing day of the Shanghai World Expo as World Cities Day in order to encourage human beings to strive for urban innovation and harmonious development.

Fuzhou is the political, cultural and transportation center of Fujian province, and a central city in the economic zone on the west side of the Strait and an important city along the southeastern coast of China.

As a hometown of overseas Chinese and the main ancestral home of the Taiwan residents, Fuzhou's economy has enjoyed steady economic growth since reform and open-up. Official statistics show that Fuzhou's GDP grew 9.79 percent to 779.95 billion yuan ($116.4 billion) in 2018, ranking second in the province.

Meanwhile, Fuzhou is also among the cities with high forest coverage rate and excellent air quality in China. It has won the title of National Forest City, which is the highest honor a city can receive when it comes to ecological construction.
