The Village, a classic drama directed by Taiwan-based playwright and theater director Stan Lan, was staged at the Haixia Cultural Center in Fuzhou, capital city of East China's Fujian province from July 20-21.

The play tells the story of three families moving from the Chinese mainland to Juan Cun in Taiwan in 1949 and focuses on their struggle and longing for their hometowns.

The Village raises awareness of Juan Cun culture, military dependents' villages built in the late 1940s and 1950s to serve as provisional housing for former Kuomintang soldiers and their families in Taiwan, after they fled the mainland in 1949.

"A love for Chinese culture and China is always in our soul," said Taiwan artist Feng Yigang, adding that as a cast member of the drama, he has been to many places on the mainland and is fascinated by Chinese culture.

Along with the drama's two lead actors Chiu Junghen and Sung Shauching, Feng was born and bred in a Juan Cun village.

They said that their experience is similar to the one depicted in the story, adding that the Village is not only a drama, but also a meditation on history.

The play has a unique connection with Fujian, as some of the lines are spoken in southern Min dialect, said Qu, who stars as Lao Zhao in the drama.

As a result, responses from audience members from Fuzhou and Xiamen have been stronger, he added.

Since its debut in 2008, The Village has toured dozens of cities on the mainland.

Feng said that they feel lucky to be part of an era when theater drama is prospering on the mainland.

The drama will also be shown 18 times in another seven cities on the mainland. The cities of Zhangjiagang and Lianyungang in East China's Jiangsu province will be included in the tour this year.

Speaking about where he would like to perform in the future, Chiu said that Harbin could be interesting, as the song My Home is on the Songhua River is featured in the play.

He also expressed a desire to spread awareness of the show across the mainland.
