Fujian is looking to attract Taiwan compatriots and enterprises by promoting the integrated development of the two areas, Yu Weiguo, secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee, noted at a press conference in Beijing.

According to Yu, the total trade volume between Fujian and Taiwan has exceeded 1 trillion yuan ($145.34 billion) since 1981, when the first Taiwan-funded company began operating in Fujian. The number of Taiwan-funded projects and the actual use of Taiwan funds in Fujian ranked first and second respectively in the Chinese mainland last year. After it began providing running water to Kinmen in August of 2018, Fujian is mulling plans to realize the connectivity of bridges, gas and electricity with the city as soon as possible.

This year, the provincial government implemented 42 additional measures designed to benefit Taiwan compatriots, Yu said, adding that further policies will be implemented in the future. The government will also make social and medical insurance available for Taiwan compatriots in Fujian.

Through the annual Straits Forum, the relationship between Fujian and Taiwan has been strengthened. To date, Fujian has held the Straits Forum for 11 consecutive years, attracting more than 100,000 Taiwan compatriots.
