The Guling Scenic Area in Fuzhou, Fujian province has been upgraded to be a national-level tourist resort, according to announcement made by China National Tourism Administration Tuesday.

It is among the nine newly added ones on the list, which still include Yalong Bay Tourist Resort in Sanya, Hainan province and Penglai Tourist Resort in Yantai, Shandong province.

Guling Scenic Area, or Kuliang Scenic Area, is one important constituent of Fuzhou Gushan Scenic Zone. As a summer resort located in Huanxi Town, Jin'an district, Fuzhou, it was established by western missionaries in 1886 and is about 13km from downtown Fuzhou. With an altitude of roughly 800 meters, it is not over 30 degrees Celsius in summer and thus attracts many visitors who can't bear the blazing heat of the city.

In 1935, there were over 200 villas of diversified styles and also many churches, hospitals, tennis courts, swimming pools, public welfare hall and other public buildings.

Chinese poet and novelist Yu Dafu used to take it as a summer resort here in the 1930s.
