Singing Stones, a comedy about a group of youngsters from Pingtan and Taiwan, is set to begin shooting soon, according to Wang You, the film's producer.

Wang announced the news at a press conference in Fuzhou, provincial capital of Fujian province, on Saturday.

The film begins with the meeting of three youngsters—Chen Yiling, a renowned female designer, Meng Hao, a mute with a talent for music, and Zhou Yi, an entrepreneur from Taiwan—in Pingtan, an island city in Fujian.

All born in the 1980s and 90s, it depicts how the three youngsters chase their dreams despite the great hardships they experienced in their early lives, Wang said.

According to Yu Hanqiu, the film’s director, the film's title, Singing Stones, is not just a kind of rhetoric, but also refers to real rocks in Pingtan.

A couple of years ago, a young couple from Taiwan accidentally discovered that hitting the igneous rocks collected from the mountains near Beigang village in Pingtan could produce beautiful melodies.

The finding later inspired them to open up a cultural and creative base in the village and the stones thus gained recognition as "singing stones".

The story coincides perfectly with the film's theme, young people's great determination to pursue their dreams, Yu said.

As the closest place on the mainland to Taiwan, Pingtan has gradually become a hit destination for cross-Straits youth to seek employment or start up new businesses.

To date, more than 700 young people from Taiwan are working in Pingtan, and this number is expected to increase further given the city's rapid development in recent years.

In 2016, the city's GPD reached roughly 20.5 billion yuan ($3.1 billion), an increase of seven percent over last year.

In addition to Pingtan, scenes from the film are also scheduled be shot in cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Taipei. The movie is slated to premiere in the summer of 2018.
