Patients are no longer having to wait in long lines to pick up their prescriptions at Fuzhou No 1 People's Hospital, after the hospital introduced two new smart medicine dispensers in July.

The giant machines have replaced the rows of shelves stockpiled with thousands of different kinds of medicine at the hospital.

The smart dispensers are able to read patients'prescriptions and dispense the required drugs in just a few seconds.

The modern system is 70 percent faster than pharmacists manually checking and dispensing prescriptions, according Liu Yunchun, director of Fuzhou No 1's pharmacy department.

More than 3,000 patients pick up prescriptions at the hospital's pharmacy per day on average, and long lines used to be a common sight.

But the scene at the pharmacy now looks radically different, according to Liu.

"Even during peak periods, it only takes patients less than one minute to get their medicine after paying their medical bills," Liu said.

A resident surnamed Zheng was impressed by the accelerated service.

"My medicine has been prepared before my arrival. [The experience] makes me feel like I've switched from a slow train onto a bullet train," she said.
